A group of Aceh Muslim clerics were reported to challenge the candidates of Indonesian presidential election to perform a Quran reading test as a method to settle on the best figure to become Indonesian President and lead this country that has the biggest Muslim population. Regarding this proposal, the two candidates’ campaign team provides different response.
Candidates Respond Differently Regarding the Quran Reading Test
Through the campaign teams of the two candidates, Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto, the two have reacted differently to the idea that is proposed by Aceh Muslim clerics. The campaign team of the incumbent Joko Widodo responded that Mr. Joko Widodo was ready for such test. He was said to be willing to fulfill the invitation for the test.
On the other hand, the challenger candidate, Prabowo Subianto’s campaign team that is supported by two Islamic-based parties including the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said that this kind of test is unnecessary. Then, even it really happens, the organizers must be able to show evidence of the candidates’ expertise in reading Quran.
In this case, there can be something like certification about the candidates’ proficiency as well. Related to the issue, Andre Rosiade as the executive of Gerindra Party stated that Mr. Prabowo who is the Gerindra Party’s chairman was actually not refusing the test. However, Andre said that Mr. Prabowo is not the type of someone who will show off his private religious life.
The Quran reading test itself is a challenge offered by Aceh Muslim clerics that is supposed to be held on January 15 in Banda Aceh exactly at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. This group of Muslim clerics claimed that they have sent invitation for this event to both of the campaign teams. Separately, MUI, Indonesia Ulema Council said they will support if both tickets agree. (berbagai sumber/photo credit: unsplash.com)
